"Blindness" (original title in Portuguese: "Ensaio sobre a Cegueira") is a novel written by José Saramago, a Portuguese author and Nobel laureate. The book was first published in 1995 and translated into English in 1998.
The story takes place in an unnamed city, where a mysterious epidemic of blindness breaks out, affecting thousands of people. The government and medical professionals are unable to understand the cause or cure of the blindness. The novel explores the consequences of this disaster on individuals, society, and the human condition.
