Emily, finally at peace, stops Victor from drinking the poison meant to unite him with her. Instead, she removes the ring and gives her blessing to Victor and Victoria. She turns into a thousand butterflies, ascending to the afterlife in moonlight. To his horror, the root moves

Victor, now resigned, decides to marry Emily properly in the Land of the Dead—even asking Elder Gutknecht (the ruler of the dead) for permission. But as they prepare, Victor realizes he cannot truly love Emily because she is dead. He promises to stay with her out of pity and duty.

Meanwhile, in the living world, Victoria discovers that Lord Barkis only wants her fortune. She refuses him and is locked in her room.
