Here is my curated list of popular (and a few under-the-radar gems) anime series and manga that deserve a spot on your shelf or screen. If you like screaming power-ups, epic fights, and "the power of friendship," start here. Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen Why watch? Currently the king of modern shonen. The animation by MAPPA is fluid, violent, and gorgeous. It follows Yuji Itadori, who eats a cursed finger (don't ask) and becomes host to the most dangerous villain in history. Vibe check: Demon Slayer but edgier and with better choreography. Manga: Chainsaw Man Why read? While the anime is great, the manga is unhinged . Denji is a boy in crushing debt who merges with his pet chainsaw devil. It is bloody, weirdly horny, genuinely funny, and then suddenly devastating. Best for: Fans of chaos and Tatsuki Fujimoto’s cinematic paneling. For the Psychological Thriller Fan (The "Mess Me Up" Corner) You want twists, turns, and existential dread. I respect that. Anime: Death Note Why watch? The gateway drug for a reason. A genius boy finds a notebook that kills anyone whose name he writes in it. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game between him and the world’s greatest detective. Essential viewing. Manga: Monster by Naoki Urasawa Why read? This is the Breaking Bad of manga. A brilliant Japanese brain surgeon saves a young boy’s life, only to discover years later that the boy grew up to become a serial killer. It is slow, methodical, and terrifyingly realistic. Length warning: Long (18 volumes), but every page is perfect. For the Romance Lover (Wholesome & Painful) Yes, anime romance can be more than just blushing and accidental falls. Anime: Fruits Basket (2019 remake) Why watch? The definitive magical romance. Tohru Honda ends up living in a tent in the woods, only to be taken in by the mysterious Sohma family. Their secret? They turn into animals of the Chinese zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. Bring tissues: You will laugh, cry, and fall in love with every character. Manga: Blue Box Why read? Currently running in Weekly Shonen Jump (rare for a pure romance). It follows Taiki, a badminton player, and Chinatsu, a basketball star, who end up living under the same roof. No gimmicks. No fantasy. Just stunning art and the slow-burn pain of high school athletics and crushes. For the Deep Thinker (Slice of Life & Philosophy) Not every show needs a villain. Sometimes the scariest thing is growing up. Anime: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Why watch? The sleeper hit of the decade. The hero party kills the Demon King in episode 1. The rest of the show is about Frieren (an elf who lives for thousands of years) realizing she never truly got to know her mortal friends who have now aged and died. It is melancholic, beautiful, and healing. Manga: Goodnight Punpun Why read? Trigger warning: Depression. Punpun is depicted as a simple, cartoon bird in a very real, cruel world. This manga follows his life from elementary school to young adulthood as he spirals into darkness. It is the most beautiful, soul-crushing thing you will ever read. Approach with caution. The Wild Cards (Isekai & Weird) Because sometimes you just want to get hit by a truck and live in a video game. Anime: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Why watch? The granddaddy of modern Isekai. A 34-year-old loser dies and is reborn as a baby in a magical world. The animation is movie-quality. Warning: The main character is deeply flawed (perverted and lazy), but the story is about genuine redemption. It is controversial but incredibly well-written. Manga: Dandadan Why read? The hottest manga on the planet right now. It’s about a girl who believes in ghosts and a boy who believes in aliens. They bet who is right, only to discover both are real. It has UFOs, Yokai, Turbo Grannies, and the most chaotic, hilarious energy ever drawn. Quick Fire Recommendations (No time to read? Here’s the TL;DR) | If you liked... | Watch this... | Read this... | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | Game of Thrones | Attack on Titan | Berserk | | John Wick | Lycoris Recoil | Sakamoto Days | | Ted Lasso | Haikyuu!! | Real |
