Massage therapy has been practiced for centuries in various cultures, with its benefits extending beyond physical relaxation to emotional well-being (Field, 2014). In Japan, massage is an integral part of traditional culture, with techniques like shiatsu and anma being used to promote relaxation and balance (Kobayashi, 2017). Similarly, in the United States, massage therapy has become a popular means of stress relief and relaxation, with many individuals seeking out various forms of massage, including Swedish, deep tissue, and sports massage (American Massage Therapy Association, 2020).
This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing in-depth interviews with a Japanese man who provides massages to American wives. The participant, referred to as "Taro," has been practicing massage therapy for over a decade and has worked with numerous clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
