The address on his lease was a joke. A cruel, faded joke written in a font so small he had to squint. He tapped his phone. 11% battery. The map app spun a little loading wheel that seemed to laugh at him.
“Seen it a hundred times.” She set down her rag. “What’ll it be, new guy?”

Inside, the air was thick with grease and secrets. A row of booths hugged the windows, empty except for a man asleep with his head on a crossword puzzle. The counter was sticky chrome. Behind it, a girl with purple hair and tired eyes was wiping the same spot on the counter over and over.
“First thing,” he muttered to himself. “Find the apartment.” The address on his lease was a joke
“Coffee. Black. And… do you know where Mariner Street is?”
She whistled. “That’s seventeen blocks north. You walked the wrong direction.” 11% battery
“South end. Numbers go up that way.” She pointed with the coffeepot toward a grimy window. “What number you need?”
She poured the coffee—thick as mud, dark as a bad mood. “You’re on it.”
