Scratch has turned. He’s looking at Marty now. The camera pans—a cinematic move you never programmed—to show Scratch’s face filling the monitor. His mouth opens wider than any jawbone should allow.

It’s not a standard dev kit. Not a SGI Indy or a NeXTcube. It’s a custom job—a black tower the size of a mini-fridge, with cables running to a gutted arcade cabinet. The marquee, hand-painted with white-out, reads: .
Scratch raises one clawed hand. On screen, the Sears Tower squeals . A digital shriek from the tiny speaker. Then the building folds—not collapses, folds , like a piece of paper in a malfunctioning printer. Floors pancake into each other. Windows scream as sprites of people—static, 2D, terrified—run into the walls.
He moves. Not the jerky, tile-based movement of the arcade. This is fluid. He turns his head, slowly, and looks directly at the bottom of the screen . At the HUD. At your name in the debugger.
Not metaphorically. His hand, a mess of green polygons and jagged vertices, pushes out of the glass like a chick breaking an egg. The CRT bulges. Sparks fly. The hand grabs the edge of the desk, and the wood renders incorrectly —it becomes low-res, chunky, like a bad texture map.
And right now, high water is the least of your problems.
You don’t type that. Your hands are hovering over the keyboard.
You stumble back. The machine is humming louder now. The disk drive is smoking. But the old version—the rampage trainer old version —is no longer a program. It’s a cage, and something has learned how to open the door from the inside.
You are Danny “D-Zone” Kowalski, 28, former skateboard punk turned “gameplay systems architect.” That’s the title. Your actual job is to make monsters punch buildings. Specifically, to finish the Rampage sequel that’s shipping in eight weeks, come hell or high water.
On screen, your monster appears. Not the playable Lizzie, George, or Ralphie. This is something else. Something from the “old version” the designers scrapped two years ago. A beta creature they called “Scratch,” a failed experiment with particle physics and AI pathfinding. He was cut because he was “too unpredictable.”
