Set in a remote Bavarian village in the autumn of 1987 (shot on location, in real time), the story follows (a haunting performance by Sybille Brunner), a midwife who returns to her hometown after her estranged mother dies. Wechselbalg is not a fun movie. It’s slow, muddy, and the dialogue is 70% Bavarian dialect so thick you’ll need subtitles—even if you speak German. But it is a of folk horror.
